Jelena Jelaca was born in 1973 in Belgrade.
She studied painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts from 1993 to 1998 when she graduated in the class of professor Radomir Reljic. In the same year, she started her postgraduate studies in mass media under the mentorship ofprofessor Dragan Jovanovic. She gained her Master’s degree in 2000 when she alsobecame a member of ULUS.
Since she began exhibiting in 1994, Jelena has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Serbia and abroad.
Jelena has presented her work with paintings, drawings, sculpture and animation.
In 2003 she began keeping some sort of art journal of people, places and events thatmade strong impression on her. This ongoing project has resulted in two exhibitions so far, Journal of movements (2009) and We must move (2014).
In contrast to the documentary perspective,Jelena also has another one, escapist, probably best presented by her exhibit Mexico (2003) 29 paintings that illustrated the atmosphere of a country that Jelana actually never visited..
Her (so far unexhibited) series Post- apocalyptic Melancholy, visually inspired by cocktails, may at first seem escapist, however, it deals with consequences of pollution and environmental deterioration, displays of mutation and disruption, so we could also say it is ecologically engaged.
Social engagement, Jelena revealed through a series of drawings and later prints, in 2006/2007 Gender Studies, where intimate portraits led her subject matter focused on gender identity issues.
Apart from traditional painting, Jelena also involved herself in multimedia projects, first time while on her Master’s studies with Metamorphoses of self portraits that she portrayed using sculpture, poster, installation, animation.
Many years later, she returned to multimedia with project Super heroine(2012) that was presented with sculpture, photography and video art.
